| Classic Capitols 16" x 14" / Black Walnut This commission was a joyous exercise in rediscovering the classic form. Ionic coils, acanthus leaves, balance and symmetry, all of these major component parts were carved out of one solid piece of walnut. For me, the fun part came as a result of working in a 'parallel' carving style. I would use a chisel or gouge on one capitol, making the cut in a certain way, then repeat the stroke or cut in the other capitol. In this way I got them both to be exactly the same. And, I only had to think once for each two mallet strikes! |
